| What We're Up To |

| Why Should an Individual worker join a Union when he is not required to do so? First, and foremost; because he or she believes in Unions and Collective Bargaining as essential to a just and democratic industrial society. Only through unions can workers bargain effectively with employers to obtain better wages and benefits, protect themselves from arbitrary treatment, and establish a system of law and justice in the workplace. Only through collective action can a worker have a voice in fixing the terms under which he works and introduce an element of democracy into the government of industry. Second, He should join because the Union as Majority Representative is bargaining on his behalf, obtaining benefits in which he shares, providing protection he enjoys, and processing his grievances to secure in full measure those benefits and protection. As a beneficiary of the Union’s efforts, the individual has a sense of responsibility to join with fellow employees in supporting the Union. Third, A reason for joining is that he wants to have a voice in the decisions of the Union and the choice of its leadership. The Majority Union in negotiating agreements and processing grievances vitally affects every significant aspect of his working life. Only by being a member of the Union can he help shape negotiating policies, vote on proposed agreements, discuss pending grievances, or Vote on the Officers who speak and act for the Union. The employee joins the Union because he wants to become a full citizen in his branch of industrial government, participating in its decisions and sharing its responsibilities |
